Gutter FAQ
Get answers to the most common questions about gutter installation, maintenance, gutter guards, and protecting your Northern Arizona property.
Gutters are a critical part of protecting homes in Arizona, even in a drier climate. During monsoon season, sudden and intense downpours can cause serious water damage if rainwater isn't properly directed away from the home. In fact, most structural damage is a direct result of water damage caused by a lack of, or improper guttering.
Without gutters, water can pool around the foundation, leading to erosion, cracking, and even flooding. Gutters also help prevent staining on stucco or siding, protect landscaping, and reduce the risk of wood rot around fascia and eaves. In wildfire-prone areas, the addition of gutter covers is especially important to keep dry debris out and minimize fire risk. Simply put, gutters in Arizona aren't just helpful—they're essential.
No, gutters should not be perfectly level—they need a slight slope to function properly. Gutters must be installed with a gentle pitch (typically about ¼ inch of drop for every 10 feet of gutter) so water flows efficiently toward the downspouts. If gutters are level or sloped incorrectly, water can pool, overflow, or back up, leading to damage over time.
For every 30-40 feet of gutter, it is important to have TWO DOWNSPOUTS to ensure proper drainage and prevent overflow. During a heavy monsoon rainfall, a single downspout can become overwhelmed. Two downspouts allow water to flow evenly from both ends of the gutter, minimizing stress on the system. With a downspout at each end, gutters can be sloped from the center toward both sides for a lower-profile slope that still drains effectively.
Seamless gutters are custom-cut on-site from a single piece of material to match the exact length of your roofline. Unlike traditional sectional gutters that are joined together every 10-20 feet, seamless systems have no joints along their runs—only at corners and downspout connections. This dramatically reduces leak points, which is where most gutter problems originate.
Seamless gutters also offer a cleaner appearance, require less maintenance, and have a longer lifespan than sectional alternatives. Because they're fabricated on-site by our specialized equipment, every gutter is made to your home's exact specifications for a perfect fit.
Even without trees directly on your property, gutters can accumulate debris from wind-blown leaves, seeds, dust, and small particles. In Northern Arizona, this is especially true during monsoon season when wind can carry debris from considerable distances. Gutter guards also provide critical fire protection by preventing dry debris accumulation—a significant concern in wildfire-prone areas of Arizona regardless of your immediate tree coverage.
Snow retention systems prevent sudden snow and ice slides from your roof—a real danger in Northern Arizona's mountain communities. When accumulated snow releases from a metal roof all at once, it can destroy gutters, damage landscaping and vehicles, and seriously injure anyone standing below. Snow retention holds the snow in place so it melts gradually and safely. This is especially critical at higher elevations like Flagstaff, Williams, and Prescott where significant snow accumulation is common.
